Transition to Secondary School Resource Pack

Here is a resource to use with year 6 pupils when thinking about transition to year 7. The lessons focus on the following topics: Subjects Timetables Following a timetable Getting lost Making friends Clubs and opportunities Planner organisation After school timetable managing your time. Lesson 1 includes: A detailed overview of what they might cover in year 7 based on the KS3 curriculum. Each subject has an overview of what they might learn. A worksheet for the children to complete about the subjects they will cover. An example of a one week secondary school timetable and a quiz for the children to complete based on the timetable - e.g. where is this subject taught? Do you have the same teacher for English every lesson? etc An example of a two week secondary school timetable and quiz for the children to complete based on the timetable - e.g. why might you need a two week timetable? How many times over the two weeks do you have chemistry? Both timetables are included within the PowerPoint and can be easily printed off for the children. Lesson 2 and 3 includes: Powerpoint for two lessons, 34 slides in length covering the topic of homework and organisation. It includes planner examples, timetables and all of the resources they need to bring to their secondary school. Planner example pages of good and bad planners and how to organise your workload. Blank after school timetable template for the children to use next year. Blank ‘What to take to secondary school’ template for the children to use next year (resource H). Resource sheet A - matching activity of the different formats of homework they will receive. Resource sheet B - Comparing the two planner examples activity using an example of a good and a bad planner. Resource C and D - Using a list of tasks given by ‘teachers’ (resource D) the children have to fill in their blank planner (resource C) with the information as if they were being set the homework at school. Resource E - elicit the children’s ideas on what they think they might need to bring to school. Resource F, G and H - the children will be using an example timetable of a school day (resource F) and an example after school timetable (resource G) to create a resources list for each school day using the ‘what I need every day’ sheet (resource H). Lesson 4 and 5 include: Information on different clubs and how they might be beneficial. Information on making friends. Information on finding your way around schools. Links to BBC transition resources. Worksheets on making friends in secondary school (3 in total).
